Lathe Alignment Check

Tailstock

I was suprised that SIEG, or whoever their Tailstock vendor is, used bogg (body putty) on this assembly. Around the set screw used for ??locking??adjusting??aligning?? there is a fair bit of bogg.

This tailstock has casting sand mixed in with the paint above the locking nut. The machining/scraping of the prism slide and plain slide surfaces of the base is terrible. The aligning surfaces don't. The mechanical design is poor. Everything else about it is so ugly and shoddy, why bother with bog?

Once I have a shim pack which will give a consistant alignment, my current plan is to then epoxy the whole works together, do the lever lock, then bogg it to hide as much as possible, and paint it.
